Weather

A country with extremes of weather, with severe winters, especially in the north and hot summers often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (85 degrees Fahrenheit).

Passport / Visa Requirements

All nationalities require a visa.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are recommended for cholera, hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, tuberculosis and tetanus. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if coming from an infected area. Medical facilities in the country can be limited, so a comprehensive medical kit is a wise precaution.

Political / Economic Situation

The country has an old-style communist government, which keeps very tight control on the economy and everyday life in North Korea. The economic situation has deteriorated over the past 40 years, especially since the loss of some key markets such as the old Soviet Union.

Restrictions

A government-sponsored guide will be provided for all foreign tourists. Foreigners are only allowed entry to the country by rail or air.

Airports / Air Access

Pyongyang's international airport has direct flights to and from Bangkok, Macau, Beijing, Shenyang, Moscow, Berlin and Khavarovsk.

Road Conditions / Infrastructure

There is an international rail service from the capital to Beijing and Moscow. There is a large road network but of variable quality.
