Kazakhstan has a typical continental interior climate of hot summers and intensely cold winters. Rainfall, however, is very low.

Passport / Visa Requirements

Most nationalities except Eastern Europe and Vietnam require visas to enter the country.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are recommended for cholera, hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, tuberculosis and tetanus. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if coming from an infected area.

Political / Economic Situation

The country has a stable government which has coped well with the post-Soviet situation.

Airports / Air Access

Almaty has an international airport with flights to and from Frankfurt, Moscow, Tashkent, Bishkek, Samarkand, Urumqi and Istanbul. Shimkent, located in the south-central region near many Silk Road sites, has flights to Moscow and some of the capitals of the former Soviet republics. Otrar and the Khodzha Akhmed Yassawi Mausoleum are best reached from Shimkent. Taraz has an airport served by domestic flights. Tamgaly and the Gold Man are near or in Almaty respectively.

Road Conditions / Infrastructure

There are rail or bus services to all sites not reachable by air. Bear in mind the size of this country when selecting your travel option.
