Travel Tips and Country Facts

Weather

Turkmenistan has an even more extreme version of the continental interior climate than some of its neighbours due to its remote location in the centre of Asia. Temperatures in winter are often well below freezing while the summer can become unbearably hot.

Passport / Visa Requirements

All nationalities require a visa except those of the former Soviet Union.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are recommended for cholera, hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, tuberculosis and tetanus. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if coming from an infected area.

Political / Economic Situation

The government has been fairly successful despite Turkmenistan being one of the poorest regions of the old Soviet Union.

Restrictions

None.

Airports / Air Access

Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat has regular air links with London, Frankfurt, Moscow, Abu Dhabi, New Delhi, Karachi, Tehran, Istanbul and other regional foreign cities. Tourists can also enter the country at the Caspian Sea port of Turkmenbashi. Within Turkmenistan there is an air service to provincial cities from the capital.

Road Conditions / Infrastructure

All Silk Road sites are served by air, rail or road transport.
